Since getting a JTV and pod hd500, I no longer gig with the vg99, and have actually incorporated a roland GR55 into my setup to add extra flavor/color. The gr55 is much more limited in terms of its signal chain flexibity and simultaneous effects compared to the vg99, but for me that is offset by having 2 internal independent PCM synth engines in addition to the COSM chain. You could replace your older roland synth, and you still would get a COSM Guitar Modelling chain. Something you may want to also consider is the gr55 instead of the vg99. The vg99's amp modelling is ok, nothing great. I eventually just steered clear of piezo 13 pins altogether and just use gk2a/gk3 setups now. Theres a workaround, but this involves a 3rd party aftermarket filter being purchased and installed. Therefore when using piezo 13 pin setups, the tone can be 'boomier' and you can get excess noise using certain COSM HRM guitar models. This is due to the fact that the output from piezo's is much broader in frequency range than what you get from rolands magnetic GK pickups. I had two godins (an xtSA and and LGXT) which both had issues with the vg99. FWIW I have a vg99 and gr55, as well as several variax. The vg99 is a powerful tool, and can create really out there unique sounds, but in terms of the traditional guitar sounds, the JTV's are quite a bit better.Ī bit of a warning to you, the VG99 has somewhat of an issue with piezo pickups. However, with the JTV, line 6 updated the hardware and its much closer in performance. There used to be a big discrepancy between the older variax's and rolands vg99 alternate tuning performance, with roland having quite an edge. The acoustics in the variax are quite a bit better than rolands. Rolands arent particular bad, but in a side to side comparison I strongly prefer Line 6. The detail of the modelling is superior to Rolands VG99/Gr55. For cover band use, id recommend getting one. Thanks.įor just pure guitar modelling, i've found the JT Variax is the best. I guess those of you with unlimited budgets are using the Tyler/Variax into an AxeFx mostly?Īnyway, please give me your ranking of various guitar/amp emulator solutions for cover band use. I doubt I'll switch, as I already am somewhat invested in the Roland route, but would like some input from those of you who have compared the two "solutions". It would allow use of a wireless as well, which is handy. I've been curious about the Tyler or Warmoth guitars with Variax electronics, and of course some use it with the Line 6 floor or rack units with good success. I'm not in love with the feel of the Godin, but its not bad at all. I've been thinking about getting a Roland VG-99 sometime to allow me to do the amp/guitar modeling tricks. I use the magnetics through my tube amp, and I use the synth output to an older Roland synth. I use the piezo through a Boss Acoustic pedal to emulate an acoustic - sounds very good when I dial in just a little clean neck pickup with it. I currently have a Godin LGX as my "cover band guitar".
